"At the Naples G-7 Summit in July 1994, the G-7 leaders emphasized the necessity of encouraging the
development of a worldwide information society and they agreed
that the relevant ministers should meet in Brussels. The
European Commission extended an invitation to the G-7 to convene
a ministerial level conference on the Information Society on
February 25-26, 1995. The Information Society Conference will
include ministerial level discussions on:
- regulatory and competitive frameworks
- the development of the infrastructure and access to it
- essential applications as well as the social, societal, and cultural aspects of the information society
Each G-7 Country, plus the European Union, will send
Ministers responsible for telecommunications and information
matters. The conference will include a session with private
sector representatives, both users and producers of
telecommunications and information equipment and services from
each of the Member states participating in the G-7 conference.
Technology demonstrations will be given by governments and
industry during the conference to showcase the benefits and
capabilities of information technology."
From the U.S. Department of Commerce notice of public meeting on November 16, 1994, regarding
the G-7 ministerial level conference on the Information Society on February 25-26, 1995, in Brussels.
Of interest to librarians are the Theme IV Electronic Libraries projects. "The purpose of this theme is to help create an advanced infrastructure for the interconnection of libraries. The bulk of
information remains underexploited in most G-7 libraries because they are not linked to available networks. Few of these institutions are experienced in providing users with electronic access to their vast resources. Network links and
related information navigational tools would enable these actors to work together through integrated network infrastructures. Projects under this theme will aim to demonstrate how telecommunications and information
technologies can provide an open and global platform for access, manipulation and circulation of digitized information in many forms."
