IFLA Social Responsibilities Discussion Group

Meeting Summary and Follow-Up

August, 13, 2000, 10:30 AM - 12:20 PM, Jerusalem

Kaplana Dasgupta and Al Kagan co-chaired the meeting of the IFLA Social Responsibilities Discussion Group in Jerusalem. About 80 people vigorously discussed the proposed recommendations for IFLA action. A number of changes were made to strengthen and clarify them. The recommendation on restructuring IFLA was discarded due to reorganization proposals adopted at this IFLA meeting. A sign-up sheet was passed around to form working groups to help implement our 13 recommendations. People were asked not to sign on for more than two working groups. About 30 people volunteered for the 13 working groups. The IFLA Section on Education and Training, the SRDG's parent body, voted to transmit the recommendations to the Coordinating Board of the Division of Education and Research at their meeting on August 18th. The Coordinating Board met that afternoon and transmitted the recommendations to the IFLA Professional Board. The PB next meets in The Hague in December 2000. We have confirmed that our recommendations will be on their agenda.

Alfred Kagan
Convener, IFLA SRDG
